We have a mix of heritage breed pigs on our farm that live outside year round. Our pigs have Berkshire (black and white) and Tamworth (red) genetics. This year's piglets also have some Hereford (tan and white) genetics in them. These heritage breeds of pig do very well outside in Manitoba’s winters provided they are given lots of straw to bury into. Ours are provided with large, round straw bales in the winter and sometimes literally disappear in the straw! On sunny days the pigs are often found sleeping out in the sun! In the summer the pigs are most active in the early morning and in the evening. They enjoy grazing and rooting through the forest floor. During the heat of the day, the spend some of their time outstretched in the sun, but they also tend to retreat and rest in the shade of the woodlot. They also thoroughly enjoy playing in puddles of water (wallows).
The Berkshire and the Tamworth breeds of pig originated in England and were brought to North America in the late 1880s. As industrial agriculture practices developed, and many smaller farms disappeared, many heritage breeds of livestock decreased significantly in number and in some cases became endangered. These heritage breeds of pig do not grow rapidly in commercial barn systems but they thrive in woodlot-managed systems and they are making a come back on small farms across North America. They are also known for their rich flavourful pork!
We currently have pork available for sale. If you are interested in purchasing some of our pork, please check out our price list on the Farm Store page and contact us for more information.
